Throughout the month of February, Jefferson National Expansion Memorial will host free programs and events in honor of Black History Month.

Want to take in a mock trail of the Dred Scott case? The Old Courthouse hosts one at 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays all month long. Interesting in learning more about the historic leadership of Booker T. Washington? Then get to the Arch February 8 through 14 and catch a screening of Booker T. Washington: Looking to Learn at the Museum of Westward Expansion.

Here’s a peek at what’s to come:

Black History Month Ranger Weekend Programs
Saturdays in February:

  • Dred Scott Trial: Old Courthouse, 3 pm
  • “Blacks in the West”: Museum of Westward Expansion, 11:15 am & 3:15 pm

Sundays in February:

  • Dred Scott Trial: Old Courthouse, 3 pm
  • “Blacks in the West” :Museum of Westward Expansion, 3:15 pm

Saturday, February 22 Special Storytelling Events:

  • Storyteller Bobby Norfolk brings characters from the west and their stories to life. Museum of Westward Expansion, 1 pm & 3 pm
  • Sheriff Bass Reeves (storyteller Armon Wynne) shares his amazing story of his early life as a slave to becoming one of the first African-American lawmen as a United States Deputy Marshal in the Indian Territory. Museum of Westward Expansion, 2 pm

Black History Month Film Series
*Each of the following films screen at the Old Courthouse. Films run on the ½ hour from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.
**The film Dred Scott: Freedom on Trial will show at the top of every hour from 9 am to 4 pm.

  • February 1-7: Frederick Douglass: An American Life
  • February 8-14: Booker T. Washington: Looking to Learn
  • February 15-21: Carver: Man of Vision
  • February 22-28: Never Lose Sight of Freedom

***Each of the following films screen in the Special Exhibits Gallery at the Museum of Westward Expansion. Films continuously run from 9:15 am to 5:30 pm.

  • February 1-7: Sweet Auburn: The Martin Luther King National Historic Site
  • February 8-14:  Never Lose Sight of Freedom
  • February 15-21:  Tuskegee Airmen
  • February 22-28: Dred Scott: Freedom on Trial
